This webinar highlights how the Town of Westborough’s Department of Public Works implemented a Sector Maintenance Program to provide predictable, systematic care for an estimated 30,000 public shade trees across distinct geographic sectors. By embedding urban forestry best management practices into daily operations, the department established a sustainable urban forest maintenance plan in just four years. With a team of only 3–4 full-time employees, the program consistently delivers impressive results, including approximately 700 hazard tree removals, 24 lane miles of trimming, 4,200 trees trimmed, and 120 bare root trees planted annually. The session will also showcase Westborough’s publicly accessible ArcGIS-based urban forestry suite—featuring a work order management system, tree inventory, eco-benefits calculator, daily job hazard assessments, and advocacy tools—and explore innovative strategies such as heat island imaging to guide large-scale planting, a two-year plant health care plan, and drip line irrigation systems that reduce water use by 90% and labor costs by up to 75%. Attendees will gain practical insights into building an efficient, data-driven, and resilient urban forestry program.
